Unleashing Queensland’s coal potential

Part of Queensland’s rich Bowen Basin, the Byerwen Mine is located 45 minutes west of Glenden and showcases Queensland’s incredible resources potential. The open-cut mine will produce up to a staggering 10 million tonnes of hard coking coal per year.

Byerwen Mine was granted the mining leases for the project in May 2017. Mining operations have commenced, and construction of the Stage 1 Coal Handling and Preparation Plant is complete. We’re proud of how efficiently Byerwen has come online and the tremendous expertise of our primarily Queensland workforce.

In fact, Byerwen Mine is committed to maximising local content outcomes.

Working together

At our Byerwen Mine we harness the expertise of top-tier contractors, including Macmahon and Sedgman, for exceptional collaborative results. QCoal Group works closely in partnership with our chosen contractors and other stakeholders to ensure that our employment and procurement strategies echo our own commitment to supporting the local people and communities while delivering an efficient mine.

At QCoal Group we’re not just committed to maximising local industry participation – it’s our priority. So, our contractors are required to give preference to high-quality local service providers that are competitively priced and compliant with the relevant standards and specifications.

Our promise is that Byerwen Mine will always deliver the community-centric approach that benefits Queenslanders first.

The Byerwen workforce

At Byerwen Mine we’re proud to employ a workforce that calls the local area home. QCoal Group, in cooperation with Sodexo, operates a purpose-built camp to accommodate our workforce, almost 60% of which live within two hours of Byerwen, including in the regional communities of Glenden, Collinsville, Bowen and Mackay.

In our diverse family, approximately 8% of our Byerwen Mine employees are proudly Indigenous. This figure stands out against Queensland’s coal mining industry average of  just 4%. And it’s something we’re immensely proud of.

At Byerwen we’re not just extracting resources. We’re also extracting a better future for our people.

Our joint venture partner JFE

At QCoal Group , we’re proud of our partnership with JFE Steel Corporation, Japan’s second-largest steel mill. JFE produces 25Mt of crude steel per annum, delivering the vital steel used to make cars, ships, high-rise buildings and electricity infrastructure around the globe.

As a long-term buyer of coking coal from Queensland, JFE have long supported the development of our state’s coal industry and have made a significant contribution to Queensland’s economy.

JFE first invested in Byerwen Mine in 2009, right back to when the project was a greenfield site. This mutually beneficial investment has ensured that JFE has secured a stable supply of high-quality coking coal for its steel plants and enabled the ongoing development and productivity of the Byerwen Mine.
